Office of Air Force History
Welcome to the Office of Air Force History (OAFH). The OAFH is the source of authoritative information on RAAF history and is the historical analysis arm of the Air Power Development Centre (APDC).
The OAFH is the source of authoritative information on RAAF History. It implements the policy on the collection of Air Force History as part of legislative requirements and uses the information to carry out research and analysis on matters of interest to the RAAF. The Office maintains a close liaison with the other three agencies of the Centre and facilitaties incorporation of historical analysis into their work.
Access to RAAF Historical Records
In accordance with legislative requirements, the OAFH collects and maintains RAAF unit history records. These records, along with other RAAF historical material, can be made available to bona fide researchers. Access to the OAFH for research purposes is by appointment only. Researchers should note that charges apply for photocopying and reproduction of CD records. View a complete listing of the historical material held by OAFH and other information relating to RAAF historical records here.
Unit History Collection
When the OAFH replaced the former Historical Section in 2004, it also absorbed the function of meeting statutory and legislative requirements for Air Force to maintain records about its activities. Under the Unit History Reporting system, all RAAF units are required to submit monthly reports or diaries on unit activities in accordance with DI(AF) ADMIN 8-7 - Unit History Records.
For Unit History Officers, the OAFH maintains additional guidance and material to assist in the completion of Unit monthly returns. The OAFH point of contact for any questions relating to the submission of Unit Histories is Mrs Roz Turner Tel: 02 6128 7010 or by e-mail to firstname.lastname@example.org
The OAFH contributes to the APDC's publishing program by coordinating a number of publications such as the fortnightly Pathfinder bulletins, historical titles and Heritage Award winners. The OAFH also maintains an online concise history of the RAAF, The Australian Experience of Air Power volume, that is part of the current RAAF Air Power Doctrine set. Upcoming publications are advertised on the Publications page.
As part of the RAAF's acquisition program, the OAFH administers the biennial RAAF Heritage Awards. These awards comprise a competition where prizes are awarded in the categories of Art and Literature, and a History Fellowship is awarded. For more information please visit the Heritage Awards page.
