Overview

Intelligence is the range of activities, processes and outputs that relate to the directed acquisition, processing and dissemination of information about threats, opportunities, vulnerabilities and operating environments. Intelligence is an integrated function carried out through constant activity across all of the domains

Intelligence informs and supports decision-making about future activity by providing processed information about external factors that may influence Defence planning and operations. As this type of information may not be readily available (or is actively concealed), intelligence relies on collection and analysis to derive insights.

Enduring principles guide intelligence at all levels. Foremost among these principles, intelligence must be timely, objective and focused on meeting the priority intelligence requirements.

Air power plays a key role in intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR), offering real-time battlespace awareness.
ISR is an activity that synchronises and integrates direction, planning and collection capabilities and actions with processing, exploitation and dissemination systems.

There is a link between intelligence, and intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) activities. However, ISR is not part of the intelligence cycle, rather it supports the collection phase of that cycle.
