What are the components of an autonomous system in the air and space domains?

Air Domain Autonomous System (generic):

  • An autonomous control system which is usually on the ground or a ship but may be on another airborne platform;
  • An UAV;
  • A command and control (C2) system
  • On the loop, in the loop, or start the loop personnel. 

Space System:

  • An autonomous control system which is usually in the ship but may be on another airborne platform, or ground based.
  • An platform - specifically designed for the space environment and earth re-entry.
  • A command and control (C2) system and communication system. 
  • Ground based assets.
  • On the loop, in the loop, or start the loop personnel. 

Key Terms

Autonomous system

A system that determines how to perform the tasks necessary to achieve a defined goal. An autonomous system responds to stimuli in a probabilistic manner and can alter how it performs tasks.
