If the Defence budget were reduced by 25%, what should its priorities be?

In 2024–25 Defence (including the Australian Signals Directorate and the Australian Submarine Agency) will be allocated $55.7 billion.

The 2023 Defence strategic review (DSR) recommended far-reaching changes to the Australian Defence Force’s strategic posture and capability in response to what it termed ‘radically different’ strategic circumstances. The DSR explained that intense China-US competition is the defining feature of our region and our time, and Australia now faces the prospect of major conflict directly threatening its national interest.
