Australia's security and prosperity is linked to the stability and security of the Indo-Pacific region.
The Australian Government has directed Defence to contribute to national security and stability objectives by conducting offshore operations short of war including stabilisation, humanitarian and peace operations.
Australia has contributed to stabilisation, humanitarian and peace operations through international organisations including the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, Multinational Force and Observers, the United Nations and other bodies.
As part of a whole-of-government response, the Australian Defence Force has contributed to many requests from regional neighbours for stabilisation and humanitarian assistance and disaster relief.

Military Operations Other Than War (MOOTW) - Although not a commonly utilised term, MOOTW refers to military operations that do not involve warfare, combat, or the threat or use of violence. They generally include peacekeeping, peacebuilding, disaster response, humanitarian aid, military engineering, law enforcement, arms control, deterrence, and multilateralism.
