In September 2015, Russia sent its military forces to Syria in response to a request by Syrian President Bashar al-Assad for help to suppress a civil war that had started in March 2011.

This book analyses the events that have occurred in Syria after Russian forces, predominantly its Air Force, carried out operations in Syria to ensure the survival of the Assad regime. It provides a brief historic background to the nation of Syria and an overview of the Civil War. The political and strategic fall-out of the Civil War and the subsequent Russian intervention is clearly analysed.

The Russian objectives in the intervention and its probable future actions are debated before the future prospects for a Russian resurgence in the region is discussed. Russian air power is seen to be leading the way for Russia to once again establish its ascendancy in the region, given the demise of the past influence of the Soviet Union.

The book is a ‘must-read’ for all who are interested in the politico-economic and security environments in the Middle-East.
